Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • ½ cup vegetable broth or water
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk (plus more if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for finishing)
  • Optional: chopped parsley or chives for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 4–5 minutes. Stir in chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, and optional caraway seeds. Cook for another 10–12 minutes until the cabbage is tender. Pour in vegetable broth and simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add the egg and gradually mix in milk until you form a soft dough. If the dough feels too dry, add more milk as needed.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of dumpling dough into the simmering cabbage mixture while ensuring they are evenly spaced. Cover tightly with a lid and steam for about 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
  4. Gently stir in 1 tablespoon of butter into the cabbage mixture before serving hot. Garnish with chopped parsley or chives if desired.
