  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
  • 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed, strained)
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 8 oz (225 g) dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture; mix until smooth.
  4. Stir in hot coffee or water until incorporated.
  5. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool the cakes completely before removing them from the pans.
  7. Prepare the orange cream filling by cooking sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, and orange juice until thickened; stir in zest and butter.
  8. For ganache, heat cream until steaming, pour over chopped chocolate, let sit for two minutes before stirring until smooth.
  9. Assemble layers with orange filling in between; pour ganache over the top and sides.
  10. Garnish with fresh orange slices or candied orange peel.
